As far as the pissing contest about weights, I haven't gone above 225 lbs for any exercise in over 15 years. Once I feel my rehab is 100% completed, I may stack some weight just to see where I'm at physically.

About 10-11 years ago I stopped going over 225 (4 plates and the bar) in bench press, was getting shoulder and elbow issues.There's very few things I go over 200 now, a few back exercises are generally the exception for me.
The older I get, the less weight and more reps and sets, also slower sustained reps I tend to do. Joints complain the next day otherwise. I still on occasion mix it up and will do low rep higher weight.
Honestly, unless you're purposely powerlifting, you don't need to go crazy no matter your size to gain and define. I did a lot of stupid shit in my 20's and early 30's, pushing myself too hard too quick, only strained my joints and tendons in the long run.
