For example in the movie the producers, they attempt to put on a play that will flop, the reason being that they insured the play for a large sum of money, so if it failed they'd be rich. So it was a dileberate attempt to fail. They wind up putting on a successful play so they did not fail at putting on the play, but they failed at failing.
Failing is a negative, failing at failing is a double negative. A double negative is a positive, it does not place more emphasis on the failure as you would like for it to do.
