the money preacher

I just got a letter in the mail asking me for 20 dollars so that a preacher will pray for me. It opened with:
please red this letter, if you will, with an open heart toward God and your future. GOD IS SHOWING ME THAT A WINDOW OF GOOD IS ABOUT TO OPEN FOR YOU- IF YOU BELIEVE AND OBEY what the spirit says.
(Caps lock is from the letter)

I cut my name out of the opening, but it tells me to open a bible to 'Malachi 3:10, and then leave this letter on that scripture tonight. Place my wallet under the Bible and place BOTH THE BIBLE AND YOUR WALLET under your bed(ON THE RIGHT SIDE) while you sleep.

it then tells me to send them 20 dollars in the mail in the morning... etc. etc. so that the preacher can pray at his window three times a day for me.

does anyone else see any hipoccracy in this letter?

my mom called this letter classic, is this practice widespread?

is anyone else upset by the fact that those most likely to respond to this letter are those that are all ready in financial trouble?

edit: here's his website-- http://www.revike.org/

Just to draw a comparison, I get crap on myspace that tells me I won't be happy for 30 years unless I reply to some bulletin about the object closest to me that's pink.

So, you can put about as much stock in Baby Jesus doing something for you as I do in the myspace bulletins.

Oh, and you don't have to get a letter in the mail before you realize that all these guys want is money. I figured that out when I was 4 and saw the collection plate pass by. Some old guy in a cheap navy blazer shoves a metal plate full of cash in your face and expects you to contribute? Yeah, god needs my cash.

I've been an atheist for years, I was just looking for any other experiences like this-- I was totally appalled at the brazen way they asked for money in a MAILING

It's a good thing that Jesus got lots of money from his followers while he was alive. 🙄

It is times like this I wish William Blake reading was required by everyone

Churches at least need the collection money for upkeep and salaries and such. Most church employees don't make a whole lot, and they have to rely on volunteers or they go broke.

So I can somewhat justify that practice. But yeah, the letters and such are laughable...I wonder if anyone ever does them.

..

P.S. William Blake is my favorite Romantic poet, by far. Understanding his underlying themes and ideas are a true joy, though he doesn't have the technical word-wizardry of some of his contemporaries (Wordsworth and Keats come to mind).

Here's an example.

A former co-worker and I were having a phone conversation the other day. During this call we were discussing the Pope. Apparently, the vatican has just told Marty's diocese that it's share of the child abuse sex scandal payoffs is $187,000. And the kicker is, NO ONE in his parish has been accused of anything!

That's a hell of a lot of roof repairs.

Did someone explain that to the industry of televangelists and shylocks that run the megachurches I see on the TotalChristTelevision network? Or is it the "Christian" thing to do when you charge 50 bucks for a bible written in large print, so the old people they're preying upon can actually read it?

But you're right, you don't need to pay for prayer. In fact, I'm certain god doesn't need anyone's money. People on the other hand, they'll buy just about anything.

chithappens, I did not get any PM. My email is [email protected]

I will tell anyone who will listen to truth. Those dudes give real Christians a bad name and feed into the misconceptions and stereotypes of what it means to except Jesus as the son of God and redeemer of our sins.

Some will want to spread a basic religious message. Others, however, will be trying to fleece trusting people by selling them religious ideas for no other reason than to get them to give, give, give until they can' t give any more.
