Onslaught was the pinicle of bad writing. he bleeds from captain america, yet he killed (well not really thanks to franklin) like everybody...
This is how it would kind of be like:
(Onslaught lifts Darkseid up and rips a gem out of his chest)
Darkseid: Wtf, wen did that get there
Onslaught: Now that the sorce of your power is gone, you are a worthless mortal!
Darkseid: er... i dont get my power from any gem... and if i did it certainly wouldnt be inside me.
Onslaught:.... really?
