Ok I need some help guys. Its sunday so my Vet office is close and I dont have a key to our Med supply at the main Barn. My Small Pit/Boston terrier Lila has got a BAD case of Argasidae*soft ticks* on her feet and face. Anyone know any safe home tick removal? Like with fire ants we put down Vinegar to kill them.

well then, just leave them be til tomorrow, let a pro handle it.

If it was JUST fleas I'd have no trouble. Best way to kill fleas is to bath a dog in Dawn Dish liquid and let it soak on them for 5-10mins. It suffocates them!

I was reading a site that also said to mix in garlic with there food! See we d that with missy because she's a picky eater and has to have flavor, And she the ONLY dog with out ticks! Im going to start doing it tonight with our outside dogs.

What is it with guys and *** sucking, sheesh?

MomA, you still there? If you're still having a tick problem I have a little piece of advice that may help you.

Sorry to hear that Moma.

Whats that Kelly?

When I was a kid I saved up some money to buy a Golden Dobie that my aunt trained. I had her for 6months before she tied of Lime disease because of these damn ticks out here.=(

Well, when my goats get ticks, I usually brush their hair finely, then apply alittle bit of lemon juice in the area where I think the ticks might be.

It may sound kind of far fetched but if you can get your dog to sit still and can part his fur enough, try holding the burnt end of a cigarette close (but not touching) the tick and the heat will make him back up.

I also heard fingernail polish does the trick or if you have a match, light it, blow it out and use the and near the tick and the tick will release itself.

Hmm see that wouldn't be such a bad idea. Limes and Lemons have a strong critics acid, It would make since that the ticks wouldn't like it. But the trouble is I need to find something that will KEEP them off. I ended up picking 50 or so off her and bathed her in Dawn dish liquid and that seemed to help some but tomorrow I hope the vet can give me something that will last longer.

All you have to do, if you have the option to, is get a flea and tick collar at Wal-Mart or any grocery or conveniant store that sells pet supplies and it works wonders for about 6 months. We leave ours on even during the winter for our outside cat and then get a new one when spring rolls around...I've never seen a tick on before after getting those flea/tick collars.

Lila and max wont hold still enough for something like that tho.

We tried the tick collars sold in the stores, Doesnt work. I want to use Zima collars on them but its only sold in ONE store in Oklahoma and thats 5 hours away!

How do tick collars work?

I got those from here:
http://www.myhomeremedies.com/topic.cgi?topicid=337

zima is the brand name and the active ingredient is called amitraz and its a tick detached collar. It causes the ticks not to be able to close there mouths so they fall off and die.

WTF? That's really weird..it's always worked on my animals.

They have some kind of chemical that releases and kills the ticks/fleas if they come in contact with the animal's skin. I don't know the real "scientific" explanation for it, but that's basically it.

MomA your vet will probably give you something called FrontLine which is a little tube and you put a droplet of the liquid from the tube in your dog's hairline once a month (or around a month I should say) and it does basically the same as a flea/tick collar. There are various options...
