Superman and the Silver Surfer are actually very similar. They're both top-tier powerful yet noble almost to a fault, which is why, among other things, they're always holding back for fear of the incredible damage they would otherwise do.
They're both aliens, outsiders, though Superman is the far easier character to identify with (artist Julie Bell refers to the Surfer as "an acquired taste"😉. Superman has far more real-world power, symbolizing and inspiring the best in humanity. The S shield is supposedly the 3rd most widely recognized symbol in the world.
The Surfer is unique. When he first appeared, there was nothing like him. Spandexless, what you saw was what you got, a sleek, simple design that slamdunked the Hulk yet always spoke of higher values. If Superman represents the Hero archetype, the Surfer is the symbol of Spirit longing for freedom.
Anyway, Surfer wins because flying standing up will always be cooler than wearing red undies over tights.
