This thread got me thinking about 'FistofThe North', how he said he was "Old Money" and the slave trade....
He's Dominican; back in the day, the Dominican Republic was known as Hispaniola and it was a major slave-trade port. Wonder if his "old money" comes from his great, great grandfathers being in the slave business, as it was very lucrative. As most old money comes from the back breaking toil of others in one shape or form.

You're right, cotton resources was harvested, and more so for the Southern states. The island of Hispaniola was more so for sugar cane and coffee and banana, it's very mountainous island, but there are probably a host of resources i left off that was harvested back then.
