I love the Tim Burton Batman movies and Batman Returns kind of reminds of the same reaction the public gave to Alien 3.

I pray that TDK will not get the same backlash Batman Returns got for being too dark. Its those bloody socar mums who ruined the Batman film franchise, they knew that what they were letting their kids see was a adult movie. Batman is an adult character nowadays not the fun loving campy "brighten it up for the kids" of the 60s. Which I equally respect as a valid Batman interpretation because those were the nature of the comics at that time due to Comic Book censorship.
