However, Sam never "defeated" Gladiator. He gave him one good hit and then the X-Men showed up (which was Gladiator's goal) so the fight was pointless.
Look at that last scan. Does Gladiator look "defeated" to you? 😉
The fight was interrupted by the x-men but I think it was pretty clear after that one hit that if Cannonball had followed up on the attack gladiator would never have recovered his confidence and thus would not have gotten back up, so Sam still kicked major ass in that one. 😄
