You have the right understanding. Here is an example, one of the democratic principles are elections, the type of thing you would generally do in a republic. Elections can be accomplished and are usually good for the population. These are the kinds of examples I'm looking for. The first one you posted is another good example because it is true that one of the things a republic offers is personal freedoms.
