If you start out at a BMI of 30....then it is a very GOOD way of determining that you are overweight. Your point could be argued at a BMI of 24 but definately not at 30. You are either fat at a BMI of 30 or you are caring a lot of muscle with veins popping out.
The argument that the BMI is useless becomes less and less viable at the ends of the index. Someone with a BMI of 15 is very very skiny. Someone with a BMI of 30 IS obese....unless they are toting some muscles.
