There are two events going on at once. One event is what I would like to call "ON earth" which is what is going on in the battle against Ner'Zhul. The other event is "Out of earth" which is basically the base of what is causing everything (Politics). But those things are way over your head. Just leave it to the legendary heroes like Ice and John. Just pay more attention to the battle against Ner'Zhul. 😉

From how I have followed this (Yes I have. I have crawled in the shadows 🪩 ), the battle with Ner'Zhul is not taking place on earth.

RECAP
Many things are going on at once so please bare with me here.
Ner'Zhul has teleported Jacope III and Gaku into the outer atmosphere/nothingness along with Sonic. Meanwhile, the other heroes are left in the Ice tower as Sebastian plans to hit the earth out of orbit, Xol and Yuki are trying to search for a black hole outside the milky way, and the others plan on helping out there own ways. Black thunder bolts are hitting off two walls. One made by Sebastian and another made by Gaku.
Meanwhile in the Purgatory, Fire and the Elder God were both in a discussion until Ice and John both interferred, turning it more hostile.

I understood it as if they were no longer where they once had been. Sonic admitted his removal from his location, as well as Ner'Zhul indicating they had not moved in space alone, but also in time. Considering they are in "nothing", I would make my guess that you are fighting before or after all "that is".
