Need Advice

Ok , now I and a few friends of mine are making an Amateur film , however we've hit a slight snag.

Within said film a character is supposed to fade/phase (IE : Like a ghost or Marty Mcfly in BTTF 3, or the Cheshire Cat, or maybe even the Tardis.... ) however we're unsure of how to achieve this.

We simply need a way for him to appear transparent for a minute, possibly two.

We'll be using Macs and Final Cut Pro.

Any ideas ?

You'd probably have to use layers, I.E, he's on one layer where there is no background and you edit him into the shot, cause then you could change the layer properties and only effect him.

Playing with lighting(s) and partially over lapping or dubbing over your film? Maybe using mirror effects, flashes and things?

Take two shots of film of the same exact image...the first layer is just the same amount of time that the scene will be shot in...then take the same scene with the dude in the shot playing out his part...

then layer the two images, which if the camera was not moved even a little teeny little bit...should perfectly overlap...then fad out the layer with a "fad out" effect to make it look like he is fading out of the frame...in reality, this should be seamless...if your video editing software is unable to do that...get better software...if you are getting a weird blurry type of image when you are layer, try adjusting the image a little bit because the two "cuts" may not have been shot in the same perfect position...also, to save time and money, make sure that you rehearse your scenes really really well before starting....I don't know what you are using or how you are designating each "cut" as the "keeper" to be edited into the final piece...but keep that stuff in mind as you are doing the film.

Layers are your friend and have been the friends of film makers for ages... 😄
