The B.E.T. channel: A Modern Day Minstrel Show

I'm sure you all are familiar with it but here's the definition of a minstrel show:

"The minstrel show, or minstrelsy, was an American entertainment consisting of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music, performed by white people in blackface or, especially after the American Civil War, African Americans in blackface. Minstrel shows portrayed and lampooned blacks in stereotypical and often disparaging ways: as ignorant, lazy, buffoonish, superstitious, joyous, and musical."

Except now it isn't Whites that are the ones performing. it's Blacks.

B.E.T. is owned by Viacom and-or mostly Jewish/White men so i guess that's where they come in, as puppeteers. They're now behind the curtains/scenes letting this minstrel show happen.

In my opinion, i think the channel should be canceled. B.E.T. is disparaging towards Blacks, it adds even thicker layers to the current black stereotypes, the shows are getting worse and even more embarrassing and it's completely contradictory. 90% of B.E.T. commercial have White actor in them and/or are targeted to White audiences yet, and racially, it's called B.lack E.ntertainment T.elevision.

I don't see how anyone can't see how detrimental this channel has been as of late. Damaging meaning culture-wise. It's an anti-progressive network to the point where having nothing at all would be better for Blacks than to act out how they're expected to by the majority just for shits and giggles just to be seen as cool and favorable.

Now whether it's set up that way by Viacom is another issue.

and mtv's music sucks hard cause mostly bubble pop/alternative music for 11 yr olds like you and vh1's quality blows. They were better in the 90's. Ad the best in the 80's.

Not watching would probably be a good idea in that case.

I'll just say that if my experience with blacks came solely from BET, I'd be Imperial Wizard of the Klan, by now. VH1 has some funny stuff, like Best Week Ever, but I don't watch it often. As for MTV... as much as I hate to put down people's tastes in media, if you actually like I Love New York, Flavor of Love, or anything else related to it and will actually exert effort to defend them as decent television material, then you should simply be sterilized, lest you breed.

Just because wiki said that's what a minstrel show is doesn't mean that B.E.T is racist, minstrel was also the name of a musician or entertainer in a Kings court, doesn't have anything to do with racism. Do you have any other concerns with the wider world? Famine and war? Or is racism the only worry in your world?

and saying BET, as bad as it is, is like a minstrel show shows a complete lack of understanding of what a minstrel show was. It sounds like something a freshman year college student who took a Black Studies class would write.

Fist of the North, I totally agree with you BET sucks ass. You remember whne they were trying to get that show "Hot Ghetto Mess," off the ground. I mean we are depicted horribly on that network, even the commercials on that channel are condescending, always spoken in Ebonics, and most of the time with a hip-hop or soul theme in the background. As if the sales pitch is catering to all black people. Not all black folks speak in ebonics, and we all don't have music "in our blood." Aside from Flava Flav's reality shows and all those spinoff's BET ,hands down is the worse representation of black folk online.
