Say what you will about Loeb, but I've been digging up some of his older graphic novel work with Batman. It's pretty good stuff.

Gaiman and Moore are the artsy writers. They don't tackle too many ongoing series, so I generally seperate them in my mind from the others.

Johns is tops among the rest.

But when they do write ongoing series, like Sandman, Supreme, Tom Strong and Miracleman the product is of far superior to what others create. Your seperation is a flawed way of looking at things and a way to justify others works. The problem is they are so much better, everyone else looks like a hack.

Frank Miller and Alan Moore are comic gods.
And lets not forget Todd McFarlane

Give me pretty much anything written by them with art by Alex Ross and I'll probably never need any other comic again.
Give me a Spiderman by them and I can almost guarantee it!
