Even sadder still, that they'd probably actually still do it, if it meant making a few million from the corpse of a once beloved character.
Well I can't say I totally agree with that. George and Steven hold the rains on Indy's world. And I believe the last thing they would ever want to do is alienate fans and put a bad taste in there mouths. They love the character and they want to do him right. And while the last one may have not been my favorite adventure , it was still pretty much Indy. Remember at one point they wanted to kill off Han Solo's character and George said no.

i think without Han, the OT as we know it would be completely different. He gave character to the main cast, he may have been a dippy, happy-go-lucky imbecilic bantha turd, but it was for the best. He had the best furry friend a cast list could ask for, and a ship that could barely make it into hyper-space without falling over in a pile of its own vomit...he's one of those characters who has a place in all of our hearts - what the **** am i talking about
i don't think you mentioned the explosions, no. Or the ExPlOsIoNs!

I could get down with this, were it not for the fact of the existance of Indy IV.

Yeah I think that If Han had sacrificed himself, completing his story arc, then we wouldnt have had to put up with the New caring, sharing loved up dunce that was pie eyedly mooning around endor for the rest of the movie.
Lucas did worse than to simply kill a beloved edgy character, he took that character and pussified him to the degree that he was rendered a laughing stock.
They did it to Solo, they did it to Indy. Ford MUST be getting pissed off with Lucas publiclally humiliating him like that.
Thank f*** that LFL had no say with Blade Runner.
Otherwise we may be expected to sit through a 2 and half hour sequel showing us old man Deckard adjusting to replicant married life, and thrilling journeys to the supermarket to pick up some milk so that the new replikiddies can have their cereals the next morning and "the adventures of Indy filling out his tax returns forms" and not to mention gripping scences of Deckard being show to have "A bit of a bad back" to a dramatic scoring by John Williams...
And Queeq, what was that you just said...? (I couldn't make it out above the baysplosions!)

Indy has always been a very human and real character. Showing his faults and flaws is what has always made him appealing to audiances and go back to his very conception.
As far as Return of the Jedi , killing Solo while edgey and something that Ford suggested ( much like Marlon Brando tried to squeeze 3 million dollars out of Superman director Richard Donner for doing very little and trying to erase himself out of the movie completely) was not the way they ultimately choose to go because Empire had been so dark and Impacting & they wished to end things on a high uplifting note , as this was the Saga's climax.. Even though there choice may have not have pleased some fanboy's today who choose to look back in distain , it did complete Hans transformation from the surley and edgy pirate who only cared about himself into a friend and comrade. To have the character pop out and return to the level of the first Star Wars would have been out of place and inappropiate. While funny , and adding more humor to the film , which turned out to be a wonderful classic , ending the Saga in Emotion and excitment , I never considererd Han Solo a laughing stock in the final chapter.
Some fans tend to forget what these movies are when critising them: A 1930's pop comic space fantasy . . . . .
But what do I know.
Fair play, Jayce. 🙂
Your insight serves you well.
But bury your feelings you must, for they can be made to serve LFL's cash register.. 😛
I hear you, I just think the movie (along with the portrayal of Indy) lacked heart, lacked soul, and lacked balls.
Its just subpar Indy movies wise.
Its not a misunderstanding of the genre.
Its outright saying "I LOVED Those other three of the genre...why start being substandard in their comparison!???"...
Hope you can understand my position a bit clearer now, it sometimes comes across as over frenzied, in humour.

Oh I wasn't super crazy about the movie either. I think it was wonderful to see Harrison again , but I thought it was mild Indy instead of the hot and spicy Indy we're used too .

As do we all , unless you don't like great moviemaking. So Why indeed? And I certainly would not ask someone to do that. Nor would I try to cram my opinion down anyone's throat.

Still, Lucas didn't quite solve problems in the Solo character in ROTJ. Myabe killing him was not the only solution, but I sure think he kinda ruined the character by getting too mushy. Solo made the OT the classic that is was. He was superb in ESB and really the pirate we the movie need in ANH. But much of that was lost in the carbonite for some reason. It kinda made him obsolete in ROTJ and that is the worst for a great character like Solo.
