Both did a good job. Both were good actors in their own right prior to signing on and the first four movies.

Gough of course has a long distinguished career, having appeared in two Doctor Who stories in the 1960s and 1980s, an episode of Campion! and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.

Michael Gough played Jonathan Harker in Christoper Lee's first appearance as Dracula.

Both Gough and Hingle were good in Batman and Batman Returns capturing the spirit of the characters brilliantly but I do prefer Micheal Caine and Gary Oldman in the roles.

Gough is the definitive Alfred for me. He was exactly how I pictured the character before I ever saw Batman 1989

I dont like Caine as much as Gough but Oldamn definately trumps Hingle
