ESB and ANH question

I have a couple questions:

Why doesn't Chewie get a medal at the end of ANH?? and...

Why did Darth vader first try to kill luke, and then give him the job offer and revalation?

Chewie owes Han a life debt, therefore he can't take credibility for herione actions. Also I don't understand your second question.

If your talking about when he tryed to shoot down his fighter in ANH then I think Vader didn't know who he was then. After that I think he was just manipulating Luke.

I still don't understand, and the first part of your response, Dim, made no sense at all.

I think UBH is right for #1, and Dim is right for #2. Vader was trying to break his will, and open his mind to the dark side at the same time, in the light saber fight on Cloud City.

UBH was right for #1, that's what Lucas originally said. Yet after fan outcries and talk of alien descrimination Carrie Fisher presented Chewie with a medal on MTV, that was in 1997 as part of the Special Edition hype. For #2 it was explained in Shadows that despite Vader desperately wanted Luke to join him on the Dark Side he needed to first test his strength in the force before making such a proposal. If Luke could be easily killed there would be no point in converting him.
