Also, I don't know about anybody else, but, convoluted as it sounds, and it will get more elaborate yet in the next few panels, I have to respect the sophistication of the pseudo-science we're treated to here.

(I mean, for a 1980s DC comic, this is surprisingly good!)

No, it's the year 2002 all throughout the storyline being showcased.

I was trying to say that the Kara Zor-el we see in 1959 is the same one featured here.

It's just kind of hard to properly describe the specifics of a DC character when the work they're in includes retcons, history changes, time travel and dimension-hopping.
