(Riiight)
Rek smiled at Kat and finished the ration bar. He turned to Daran. "You ok buddy?"
Daran nodded but didn't look up. "Fine. I'm ok, really. Just a little tired."
"Get some sleep, we'll need all of us when the time is right." Rek watched Daran nod then chuckled. "He'll be fine I hope." He returned the favor and kissed Kat on her cheek. "You ok?" As he asked the question his eyes became dark and hollow. "Carlos.." Rek had felt his mind join the collective thoughts of the many. "Carlos! Pull in at the next service station." He ordered and reattached his helmet, feeling the cool flow of modulated air on his skin. "We have a rendezvous with someone." He said.
Frank looked over at Rek then remembered Sam, his old partener. "Sam where are you?"
Rek turned to Frank. "Don't worry bud, he's not infected... yet."

Millitary Base. 5 miles from Norad.
The siren began wailing as the alert went out. "Attention! Red alert! Red Alert! All troops prepare for combat!" Echoed over the sirens as troops rushed to the perimeter defense stations and gun towers. Helicopter gun-ships were preped but not activated until given clearance while armoured vehicals of all types, from tanks to jeeps, to APC's all raced to their own stations. "Repeat: Red Alert! Infected have been detected by our sentry posts! This is no drill!" The sirens faded as troops took their stations, loaded and ready for combat. It suddenly went deadly silent. The waiting game.
One of the soldiers on the gun towers scanned the ground around the Military installation. "I don't see anything.. this had better not be another damn drill!"
The soldier manning the heavy gun nodded. "Command has been really jumpy, you think this is just another false alarm." There had already been three false alarms that day, it was a wonder why they were not on constant alert.
"Maybe.." A third soldier chimed in. "After all, we're at war."

'Jacob.' Rek spoke mentally. 'What are you doing?' He kept his eyes on the APC's door.
