he was counting on Yoda to do that, which is why his ghost kept trying to convince yoda to train him in ESB.
in the space between ep 5 and 6 luke was training himself so i guess obi wan felt as though he was doing a good enough job an didnt need to intervene?

he needed some initial training in the wielding of a lightsaber, and such, besides the whole (his famili being killed thing) which orphaned luke and put him under the care of kenobi.
