Basically what he does is he rips the Midgard serpent off of the Earth will little strain. The thing was wrapped around the planet twice.

That's just so the readers could see what he was doing. I know the writing is fuzy, but the guy Superman is facing says he couldn't see him.

Besides Supes is faster than 3x lightspeed. He has been shown recently to be 10 to 15x light speed.
