I think earlier than that. A live studio audience was already quite common in the 80s.

"Married.. with Children" did it in like season 6 or 7? (Which was around 93-94) They usually had a studio audience.

Shows in the UK often had it too.

I once attended the Garry Shandling Show in 1988, it was already common then. All the Hollywood comedy shows were having live studio audiences. They were handing out invitations to all the shows then.
I think the canned laughter really dates to the 70s.

And occasional BBC "comedies".
