Kyle always had a lantern as well as had to charge it. Thing is, he didnt have to charge it like all the other Lanterns did which was every 24 hours.

He's always had to recharge his ring back to full power. What made his ring different after the ION storyline is that he always had a reserve charge. On it's own, it never completely runs out of power.
