Good questions. But if Champion (or any of the other Elders) could just be mindraped, wouldn't Thanos have just done it to him when he wanted the gems? Champs was standing right in front of him after all. Instead he had to resort to trickery and wait for the Elders to catch a bad case of writer-induced stupidity to get them.
