I've read a lot of comics, and ST is still one of my all-time favorites. If you're interested in getting into him, my suggestion would be to start reading volume 2 of his solo series around the 50th issue. That's where it really started getting good, and will definitely leave a lasting impression.
Stay away from the 3rd and 4th volumes published exclusively by Vertigo -- they were horrible, imo.
