First off, no its not irrelivant. In order to form an educated opinion on a subject, you have to be educated on the subject. Asking the other person how much they know is perfectly viable. now based on your reaction and statements I'm going to guess you haven't.
Secondly, its not a strawman, a strawman would be exagerating your words. A red herring would be the category of fallacies relating to something being "off topic".
