I personally just thought it was part of the movie and really didn't care. It was one of those 'Ew,' moments, but it's a movie. Plus, Luke didn't know, not his fault, nor is it Leia's. If anything, blame Yoda, that old green perve.

Well, as I understood from Gary Kurtz, Leia was supposed to return to the remnant of her people at the end of EP6, after Luke killed Darth Vader. Originally the next three episodes would be about Luke getting ready to confront the Emperor and go in search of 'the other' mentioned in ESB: indeed Luke's twin sister.
Apparantly, Lucas rushed things to an end in ROTJ merging Vader's and the Emperor's death in one film, as well as Leia and Luke's twin sister.
