Star Wars: The Old Republic [KOTOR MMO]

The whole point, stylistically, is that whilst it is set 3500 years before the films, they are actually making the setting reflect the films as much as possible, giving a sort of "history repeats itself" vibe. So those are not the clone troopers and droidekas (and even Imperial officers, if you look at other sources) from the films, but just very similar things. I think it's a great idea.

The only big difference in there being thousands of Sith rather than two. Hence, awesome computer game material.

Meanwhile, this interview conducted by Angry Joe is good basic info.

I must say I was surprised by the size of the player-ships, I kinda only expected a small ship we would see from the outside. Not whole ships larger then the EbonHawk.

Slightly disappointed with the revelation of the advanced classes for the Sith Warrior.

You have... a defensive Sith Warrior and an offensive one. Hmm. That's not breaking the imagination bank. I was hoping advanced classes would give a twist on the concept, not just specialise you further.

I don't really have a problem with an uberly offensive driven Sith, as an all or nothing best defense is a good offense theme reflects the sith and dark side philosophy quite well. It's for that reason that I'm also shaking my head at the idea of a defensive based Sith. I also agree that it's kind of lame. What do you think would be a more reasonable advanced class for the Sith?

I was hoping the split might actually give the opportunity to mess around with what he is, so one split for, yes, the pure super killer warrior, but perhaps one split to represent a Warrior going a bit more force-y or able to hold a conversation for the more RP elements of the game. Options of character progression other than "tank" or "blitzer", which I assume your skill choices do for a Warrior anyway.

(and indeed, there is another issue with it- what are these advanced classes doing, conceptually, that simple skill choices can not? Even the Marauder as a concept doesn't strike me as a good 'advanced' class, as surely a Warrior can be all out offensive anyway, depending on his specs. Why do I need to change to a Marauder to do that? Why are Marauders the ones specifically with two sabres?)

Not that we know what the skill choices are for the advanced classes, so perhaps more broad options are in there. But the concepts given now just sound pretty boring. And the juggernaut being able, apparently, to mess around with the 'energy levels' of his opponents sounds depressingly WoW like to me, not Star Wars.

So really, I don't think there is any point of advanced classes if they just give you options that should have been part of the base class anyway. They really should give some significant change/development to what you are.

Maybe some of the advanced options for other classes will be better. If a Jedi Knight also gets a tank/offence split though, then this concept is looking dodgy.

I share your concerns, but I think BioWare are holding their cards too close to their chests for us to start being dissappointed about the class system yet.

Fair enough!

I've never been a PC gamer. I much prefer console.

However, this game look very interesting. I'll keep myself informed on updates.

I am, sadly, a KOTOR virgin. Never played it before. Ditto WoW, too.

I wonder if a console gamer like me could be engrossed by this MMO.

Kotor should have been set after the films, it just would have made a lot more sense.

It wouldn't be the OLD repuplic then. 😐

Oh good god, no.

Hmm...

Whilst I like their suggestions for the wider game experience- personal story etc- it looks like the nitty gritty is pretty unoriginal.

I guess it is difficult to do anything that radical, but I am still a little disappointed. The Consular being a... healer, as if Star Wars combat is something that you have Priests in, healing you... gah. It's just reskinned WoW stuff.

(not to mention a vibro blade taking on a lightsabre with no apparent issues- an old KOTOR bugbear).

Not enough to completely put me off, but it's annoying. And any game that charges a monthly fee has to impress me a LOT. I suppose it will come down to how fun the fights feel, despite being not much like the source material.

Monthy fee? I think I might just get either guild wars are dark millennium.

Yup. GW2's fee-less model looks very attractive.

Eh, I'm not disappointed mostly because I'd already assumed that gameplay wise TOR is probably going to be a generic party-based MMORPG wrapped up in a Star Wars package. If I was going to play the game it would be only for the sake of running around in a star wars iconic avatar with a bunch of friends, owning my own ship and experiencing Bioware's zany stories. Not really for the excellent and unique gameplay.

That's just me, though.

I agree with Ush, I couldn't keep track of how often i though "Just like in WoW" when watching the demo, however from different podcasts/Vlogs I watch, I get the impression that it is funt o play (SpoonyOne, AngryJoe, Epic Battle Axe).

I guess I didn't have any reason to think it would be different. I just hoped it would be.

The stylistic edge of the game might be enough to keep me involved. Like I say, it'll come down to how fun the fighting is. A demo will tell me a lot.
