Indeed, as Imp stated. Michael was a straight-laced law-abiding member of society who wanted to shun his family's criminal enterprise and make a honest living, but through the deaths of his loved ones (wife, son, brother, etc. all killed by family rivals) was turned into an almost sociopathically-ruthless, manipulative criminal mastermind who embraced the family business and had anybody who interfered killed without hesitation.
