It's all speculation.
But there's likely a reason why Thanos avoided heavy hitters like Thor and Hulk before using his army to get the Power Stone for himself, that reason being be didn't want to get his shit pushed in. Also of note, he didn't put himself into play until after Odin was dead and Asgard destroyed.

The stones had to glow in order to work. That was clear.
We din't have full view of the stone the entire fight, it could have glowed off screen. Why I said it's all speculation.
While we do know as fact that Thanos did not dare tangle with Asgardians until Odin was dead, Asgard destroyed and first had the Power Stone when he faced Thor. A hammer-less Thor missing an eye.

The multiple times we saw the stone in the fight with Hulk it was off.
