Spoiler:
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is remake of the first film in the famous horror franchise. A group of teenagers are terrorised by Freddie Kruger, a monster who murders them in their dreams. The film has been classified at ‘18’ for strong bloody violence and threat. The BBFC’s Guidelines state that ‘Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable’. The film contains strong bloody violence that dwells on the infliction of pain and injury and some gory images that exceed the '15' Guidelines. These moments include Kruger controlling a victim so that he cuts open his own neck with a knife and another where he smashes through a mirror, stabbing a woman through the back of her head so that his claws emerge from her eyes. There is an emphasis throughout on physical wounding and mutilation.
The BBFC’s Guidelines also state that horror content may include ‘Strong threat and menace … unless sadistic or sexualised’. The horror is characterised by its strong sadism. In one scene, Kruger disembowels a man and then hangs him upside down whilst still alive, taunting him that it will take him up to seven minutes to die. Kruger is also portrayed as a paedophile who has previously abused his victims. In one scene we see a struggling female victim dressed in a childish dress while Kruger strokes his metallic claws down her body. He tells her that she was his favourite as a child and threatens her in a sadistic and sexualised fashion.
The film also contains multiple uses of strong language.
That's what the BBFC had to say about the rating of this film, in the spoilers it mentions example of killings, so that's why I've put spoilers on it.
just got outta this film.
the original was better. freddy's voice was too monotonous aside from the rarely occasional shouting by him.
the actual nightmares in the film weren't as surreal as often enough. freddy looked good and just as good as old freddy look each in their own way.
the part with freddy trying to come through a stretchy wall over nancy's bed as she lay asleep was so cgi looking it wasn't funny. the original pulled this scene of 10x better imo.
i love the ominous music and atmosphere in the movie and hated whenever a loud, cheap instant thrill cut it off. freddy's dialogue was different. he seemed smarter and more intimate. crueler. he really got close to his victims and their psyches.
he was still his heartless, unapologetic self which was great cause that's his essence.
so, the movie didn't suck entirely. i wasn't disappointed. Jackie Earl Haley held his own and was pretty good boogeyman. would i watch the movie as much as i did the original?, most likely no, will i watch the movie again, this new one, if it happened to be on, yes.
would i recommend it if you're a horror fan, yes. a freddy fan, yes but keep in mind that you won't experience a sense of nostalgia. this is really different. there’s no running, no chasing, and no humor. It's the darker, gloomier, more serious version of a nightmare on elm street pt. 1.
n.o.e.s. '84 - 9/10

I thought the original 'was' like that too "darker, gloomier, more serious"
its Parts 4,5,6 that lost the seriousness and all the other things.

nah, this one seemed just seemed very suspenseful and moody and depressing. the '84 version was a bit more of a fast paced fright fest with freddy either constantly cackilng and smiling evily as if he were a silent Joker with razor claws chasing you around. this new freddy had a mummyfying demeanor to him were his movements mostly just dragged.
I wasn't expecting alot from this film since the reviews made it out to be horrendous. But I was pleasently suprised. It was by no means a masterpiece but I found it enjoyable with all it's "jumpy" scenes and to see how Haley pulled off the character of Freddy. Of course their where things I disliked about the film. I wish the kids would have conveyed more of an innocence like they did in the first film. You get to see them as normal teens and that makes them feel more vunerable against the villian in the original. The remake never lets up or even thinks about letting you breathe for a minute in that sense. The gloom and doom of the big, bad, Krueger man never lets up and so the kids are never shown as,well regular kids.
I thought Jackey Earle Haley did an honorable job on carrying the torch as Freddy. He wasn't better nor worse than Englund. Just different. Throughout the film you get a feel for Haley attempting to put his own stamp on the character and I believe if their is a sequel we will see more of that as well.
I thought recreating the death scenes from the original film was a huge mistake for the most part. I could understand one or two iconic scenes re-emerging,but this film just goes for too many of them. To make it worse,it never even tops the original kills,on the exception of perhaps maybe one of them. And the scene i'm thinking of isn't even a kill. It's where the girls body is a bag and sliding down the school hallway.
I felt the remake did that scene better but only that one.
All in all I would say this remake was lukewarm. It faulters hard in a few places but shows a lot of promise as well.
Bit disappointed by this one. Very generic, Freddy didn't have much of a presence until late into the film. Haley was good but he didn't have much to work with. The filmmakers wanted to make the film serious and dark compared to the other Nightmare films, and in doing so they drained Freddy of much of his personality. Almost all just simple boo-scares that you can see coming. Wouldn't recommend this one unless you just really want to see a horror movie of some kind really badly.
Saw this today. Mediocre indeed, I should have forseen this. I don't really think JEH stacks up to Eglund at all in this role. I've never seen any of the NOES films though this was my first.
I must say though, Kris' death scene was aweswome. Never seen the original so I can't compare the two.
I would be interested in viewing the series now though. What are the good ones you recommend(besides the original of course)?
just came back from this movie. saw it again this time with the gf. she's not into horror but for some surprising reason wanted to see noes. afterwards she said the movie wasn't scary. she says what scares her are movies like paranormal activity and things like that but for the most part as long as i'm around she'll watch scary movies. she's 28.
but upon my second viewing there were things that i noticed upon this second viewing of the film. and those are: there was no token black guy which was good; listening to some hip hop thug swear at an iconic horror antihero in ebonics is just nausinating to both watch and hear. And there were non breasts, buttocks, or sex in the entire movie. a mere soft kiss was as far as anything went sex wise.
not complaining, just noticed the difference.

Funny, I didn't notice this while watching. I have yet to see Paranormal Activity but would like to.
As for the film itself, it mantains an intense state but is lacking on the scares. Is the original any different when viewed now?
