Child's Play Remake

Could not find a thread for this, but anyway apparently Child's Play is the next horror film series to recive a remake, well if Freddy, Jason and Mike can have one why not Chucky?

While talking with David Kirschner this weekend, one of the producers of the upcoming John Cusack film Martian Child, he revealed that they are working on another Child's Play sequel, but it would instead be a remake of the first Child's Play. Don't jump the gun and complain about another remake just yet, you need to here all of the details - because this could be good. The film is only "in the works" at the moment with a story being put together but Kirschner claimed it would definitely be "more terrifying".

First things first, David Kirschner is the producer behind all five of the currently released Child's Play movies. He produced the first one and even the latest one, Seed of Chucky. Secondly, he also said that the same screenwriter who came up with the original Chucky story, Don Mancini, and who wrote all five of them is working on this one as well.

There is no director attached yet, as they're still working on the story, but some interesting discussion arose around what director might be chosen for this. Kirschner went on to explain that it would be very close to the original script, with some twists that the audience won't see coming. Sound like it could possibly be good yet?

Now just imagine a lot of the same things coming together with this that the first film had. Although Child's Play only has a 6.0/10 on IMDb, it is a cult classic in terms of horror movies and I know there a lot of big Chucky fans out there (including myself - that is, at least up to the third Child's Play). So just imagine - you have the same screenwriter and nearly the same script and you get someone like Darren Lynn Bousman, Rob Zombie, David Slade, Mikael Håfström, Christophe Gans, or even Takashi Miike to direct the remake. Now that would be awesome!

Something similar to this exact idea just happened - Rob Zombie's Halloween. Kirschner even mentioned it when one of the members of the press questioned whether a remake is a good idea at this time. Not everyone liked the Halloween remake, but I know people that did. And if you think of putting Child's Play in the hands of one of the new generation's up-and-coming horror directors, we could have a great film in the works.

agreed, but apparently that's what we are getting....gah i wish they would stop remaking such good horror films, or to be precise remaking good horror films while making them worse then the original.

Rob Zombie? his remake of Halloween was terrible and one of the worst remakes I have seen... so no, that wouldn't be good. Mediocre film maker.

Also producer/writer of the films doesn't mean anything, I mean Bride and Seed of Chucky...

All these films from the 70's & 80's are awesome we don't need a ****in remakeof every horror film from that era. Just a bunch of lazy ***** who cant come up with any decent original storylines for themselves so they get famous from someone else's work.

Im against remakes 100% always have been always will be **** Hollywood main stream horror films.

What effect will these remakes have on the evolution of ideas of the next generation?

a big effect, people use remakes as the easy way out, instead of coming up with fresh new ideas they either use the cash cow formula of sequels, or cash in on classic films from an era by remaking them just for extra money....all fresh ideas seem to be scrapped in favor of tried and tested.

Bleh, yet another classic film is going to be ruined.

A few months ago it was reported that CHILD'S PLAY creator Don Mancini would step behind the camera and direct a remake to his own film that he brought to the world back in 1988 with director Tom Holland. Yesterday a brand new interview was posted to help promote the upcoming 20th Anniversary DVD release, where creator Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner talk in details about the forthcoming remake.

Producer David Kirschner confirms to Aint it Cool News that Brad Dourif will not be returning to be the voice of the new Chucky in the CHILD'S PLAY remake.

"No, no, it’s going to be Brad."

"It’s not like we would ever… who would you get that’s better?," director Don Mancini adds. "I mean with Chucky so much of it… and David and I talk about this a lot, that because he’s a puppet, there’s an aspect of him that feels like he’s an animated character, so his voice is such an immense part of it as well as what he looks like. It’s almost like recasting Homer Simpson or something. If you could recast it, you would want the actor to sound kind of like it, but it would feel weird to just be completely different I think."

One thing that fans are concerned about is the direction of the story, which Mancini insists will be straight horror.

"I think what we are mainly responding to, David and I, is the will of the fans, which is really telling us that they want to see a scary Chucky movie again. They want to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy." He continues, "I think, unless we completely screw it up, I think it has the potential to be scarier than the original based on the stuff we are talking about, which I know sounds very mysterious and abstract, but anyone in our position would say that at this point, but as you pointed out we do have the advantage of being the people who created the franchise in the first place."

Although the plot details are being kept under tight lip, Mancini confirms that the remake will in fact be an origin story.

"Other than what we said, it’s a reboot, we are telling the origin story again, but beyond certain broad stroke details, it’s really quite a reinvention I would say."

A good move going away from the Bride/Seed type movies.

Wow. I leave this forum for a while and come back to find everyone's found a remake to everything.

Child's Play is fine as is. There's nothing a remake can improve upon. I would like to see a Child's Play 6 myself. Even if that's the last film, at least let Chucky finish the series with a bang without the fluff of Tiffany and Glen(da).

The series creator Don Mancini was interviewed about the upcoming remake and here's what he had to say on why he's remaking the film and not continuing with a sixth film. "Well because the main thing is that we want to make it scary again, rather than comedic." "And I think that was really the response to SEED, the fans sort of told us that they want it to be scary again. I think if we did a direct sequel to SEED OF CHUCKY, which is a horror comedy, it would be a little tougher to continue the aspects of that story which so inherently absurd."

Don Mancini said that what it all comes down to is making the franchise scary again, and remaking it is the best way to go. "That the bottom line, our main mission was to make it scary again and the best way to do that would be to reboot it." One of the main questions we have all been wondering is how much of the original will be in the remake. Mancini explains that even Chucky will get a slight reboot...

"...And it’s a remake, but there are a lot of new things in it" he explains. "None of the details of the murders in the first movie will be repeated. All of the setpieces are going to be completely brand new, and we’re going to do a slight re-design on Chucky himself, although Brad Dourif will absolutely be the voice of Chucky, and will once again play Charles Lee Ray in the flesh. And we’re giving him more to do than he did in the original movie."

I've always been a fan of the Child's Play series. I even enjoyed Bride and Seed, mostly because of the comedy. I think they realized how hard it was to make a living doll truly scary in this day and age. The whole idea always felt kind of campy. But anyway, as long as the original creators are wanting to do a remake, I say let them.

Maybe we will get a newer, scarier Chucky...

Couldn't agree with you more. The Child's Play movies DO suck, but they still hold a special place in my heart and always will. Rob Zombie's movies have a certain quality to them that does put them in the realm of awesomeness, but it is only an opinion, no matter how much me or you say it... It won't ever be a fact.
