That was a low showing for Surfer. He was completely drained (and unconscious) after he released all that energy. Hal has one giant blast to defend against. Then he waltzes to a win.
The thread starter also engaged in a bit of hyperbole. He absorbed a small fraction of the sun, not its entirety. Like I said, low showing.

When seen in his series, it is clear that the impact causes him to be near death, actually hovering between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
