Master Chief Gets Pwned Hardcore

Oh look, something else to wet Joseph Lieberman's whistle...

"Lee said the incident shows the need for extreme safety with firearms."

Actually, I'd say it shows that some safety with firearms is needed.

Anyways, I hope he gets a Darwin award, he deserves it.

[edit] Also, RevoWution brings up a good point. Had he really recreated something from Halo he'd still be alive, unless some colourful aliens had invaded earth and killed him.

I bet the parents feel like shit

lol

maybe replace "recreating something from halo" with "got aroused from playing a violent game and decided to do something aggressive"

🙄

oh wait, I forgot, media can't affect people. Just like people don't get turned on by porn or didn't kill themselves in response to Kurt Cobain doing so

Not sure what you are trying to say, exactly.

Not sure what you are trying to say, exactly.

Main Point: The idea that he was "recreating" halo, yes, is probably silly. ie, he likely didn't dress up as a Spartan and pretend to run through Elites. However, playing a game with guns (an object prime) which creates arousal in the player, mixed with the fact it was an 11 year old kid (maturity issues, fantasy/reality issues, not understanding the consequence of their actions) probably is a much better explanation. I would say this is an issue of bad reporting.

secondary point: I was trying to address the logic that leads to comments like:

I'm thinking the detective could not figure out exactly what happened and decided to jump on the "video games are evil" bandwagon for an explanation.

Video games have nothing to do with it, he might have been watching an ancient lone ranger movie, and might have tried to emulate this cowboys antics.

It seems to me to be clutching at straws to rationalise something that the media, and the family don't want to try and explain. "Why would he have done it?" "well, he's been playing that one game that has guns in it a lot recently".

Well, my comment wasn't really that the media are just out to demonise video games, or anything like that. I just meant that they seem to be jumping to conclusions somewhat. It could very well be that he was mesmerised by the game and then wanted to act it out, like kids do. However, I don't think the media should be reporting this as if it's an established fact, when he could have just committed suicide.

indeed

I didn't address anyone particularly, since nobody had made the "games don't affect you" argument outright

yet, it has been made several times before on this forum and is constantly made within the video game community (IGN, 1up podcasts, stuff like that). I wanted to essentially either preempt the argument, or bring it right to the surface.

I wouldn't deny that media has influence on us and some might enjoy to reinact scenes they have seen, but there are two issues I'd address specifically, a) news and parent organisations enjoy to use video games as scapegoats whenever something bad happens and b) if you kill yourself because of a game and think using a real life gun like you saw on TV you are a ****ing moron.

I agree with you

An 11 year old child playing games and you call him a moron because he died in an accident and you call him a moron- you are a sick sad little man.

I'm glad they didn't go after the game but I'm disappointed that there's nothing about how stupid it is to let an 11-year old have a .22 automatic rifle.

I agree

Yes, I actually do have trouble understanding it.

How can a kid who's re-creating something from Halo manage to headshot himself?

Easily

I don't quite get this. How exactly do they know he was trying to recreate Halo? Was he actually dressed like a Spartan?

More than likely...it could have just as easily been one of those Daffy Duck Cartoons...where Daffy looks into the barrel of a gun, it fires and his face goes all black- but he survives...

He is (sorry, was) pretty much a moron. I'd say the parents are also to blame though. Who the **** leaves a rifle easily accesible while their kid is alone at home?

He wasn't killed trying to recreate Halo and the article doesn't claim that. He was killed because the way automatic rifle's are designed makes it difficult to tell if they're loaded. The kid might have been inspired to go shooting that particular time because he'd been playing Halo but it seems fairly clear that he shot himself because the gun jammed and he was trying to either clear it or determine if it had a magazine in.

As an 11 year old I don't think he is even accountable to the law...the parents however have probably suffered enough just through loosing their son.

I don't know how the law comes in. I'd just say the parents and the son are idiots.

That is correct, if he was truly emulating Halo, people would be dead, but not him. He would have been fvcking people's shit up if he was emulating MC.131

But yeah, who leaves a rifle easily accessible to an 11 year old who is home alone?

The kid was pretty dumb too...When I was 11, I was able to figure out that the consequence of me shooting myself would be getting hurt or killed. 😐

He was probably testing to see if his shield was charged. Too bad the noob didn't realize he'd walked through a power-drainer beforehand.

Halo Was Overrated

I don't understand how an 11-year old boy who had been shooting the gun multiple times a month (most likely with supervision...the type of supervision that tells you to leave the gun in "safety" at all times when not aiming at a target) could have shot himself unless he was doing something very very stupid.

What inimilist was saying...

Yes, agression is increased post violent video-game playing.

Yes, younger humans can have problems discerning reality from fantasy. Yes, the boy was playing a rated "M" game that he probably shouldn't have.

Yes, the boy shouldn't have had access to a gun OR the ammunition.
It should have been locked in a safe along with the ammunition. (or, put the ammunition in a separate safe as another way to prevent accidents.) This is all stuff I learned at...guess what....11! (Cub scouts, bitches...WeBeLoS.
