Hes been shown to influence cosmic events, create trans level beings and stalemate skyfathers. Id say there are clear indications to suggest he as Kirby intended him.
Galactus still stomps the shit out of him.
If Kirby said that they were equal, both Marvel and DC agreed to put Darkseid in two different leagues when they met in the Cross-Over. It's not cannon, I know, but it gives us a good idea of the interpretation of both character.
And Galactus have shit-stomped Darkseid in it.
