What a great film! Nothing too special from VanSant sort of just let the story tell itself, although he did a great job with narrative jumps though. An acting piece through and through with terrific performances from literally every actor in the film, not a single one disappoints. Emile Hirsch in particular was impressive, and Sean Penn was even more thorough and powerful here than in "Mystic River". Truly the best film of the year through and through.
Howard Beale I've got to say I agree with you completely. You've taken what's in my head and made a post out of it.
I'm also a fan of all the movies in your sig, although I have not gotten a chance to see The Fall or Rachel Getting Married.
I gave Milk and Dark Knight 10s, Button and In Bruges 9s and Doubt an 8.5. My only 9.5 went to Slumdog Millionaire

Boy, we match up scarily well. haha, the only big picking point is Slumdog which I gave a measly 8, and only that much due to Boyle's considerable success behind the camera, and the actors heartfelt attempts. But yeah, Milk is not one of my top of all time but is certainly close. Great great film.
