The only thing I liked about Avatar was the 3D effects, I'd never seen a 3D movie so it was interesting to see one for the first time. But if you saw the movie in 2D you'd be leaving saying 'Meh, was ok.' The storyline was mediocre at best but the effects were amazing and pretty much the only reason people went to go see it.
Other than the concept of the Avatar body i agree, the story was stock but i also think that the effects were always the main focus for this story. Cameron said that he could have told this story very easily a long time ago with existing effects but it wasnt the story he wanted to convey but instead the atmosphere and it wasnt until recently that technology gave him the outlet to capture the aymosphere he wanted. Considering that, i think he succeeded. This is one of those movies, for me, that doesn't need to be watched a second time. It was really good the first time and was impactful enough that it will stay fresh in my mind for years to come. Watching it a second time though, yeah, it was less than "meh" for me.
