Not quite it either. Defining criteria lets everyone know what you're talking about. Opinions are subjective and not technically up for debate; we all know that. But the terms people are using to describe their lists makes it clear that many aren't even clear about the standards they're applying to their own lists.

Basically, if it's "my favorites" or "all time best" or "best for their time" I just want people to say so, because debates are being started between people who are talking about entirely different things. It just hurts my brain. It's like a "Best Quarterback" thread, and having one list that only lists great passers, another that lists passing AND running QBs together, and pretending that they're the same thing.

I don't see anyone debating someone's list ... except Frisky Dingo, but he's always like that when it comes to fighters

the standard is simple: "What's your Top 10 games ever made?"

now making a "best 10 game ever made" will require several threads and polls to know which game is the best one of each genre, then list the top 10 genres and then you got your top ten list

That's actually not the title of the thread or anywhere in the OP. 😕

I'm not sure why you're opposed to defining criteria. That's basically the first step in any discussion that's going to involve more than a single variable.

With regards to any Top 10 about anything:
"To each, his own".

There is no such thing as a definitive Top 10.

Because then people's opinion will be alienated once their likings don't match the criteria set

The thread has been going on like it is since its creation.

Creating a definite list will require several threads to come to a consensus, there's way too many variables to consider: genre, historical importance, innovation, pioneering, financial success, critical success, technological breakthrough, best use of hardware (graphics, compensating lack of power...) et cetera

Now if you want to narrow it down, I think the only criteria that applies here is personal taste

Um, agreed. Except for the first sentence. Defining criteria will just let us know if people are posting their own lists or if they actually are trying to say something about the games in a more universal sense. The rest....is basically part of my point.

to me, in no order, and off the top of my head..

super mario bros.
super mario bros. 3
super mario world
mass effect 2
grand theft auto 4
arkham city
street fighter 2
tekken 6
battlefield 2
tekken 6

Half-Life 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Company of Heroes
Portal 2
Crysis 2
F.E.A.R
Crysis
Half-Life
Team Fortress 2
Mass Effect 2

Crysis 2? Why do you consider that to be one your top 10 most favorite games?

Because I love Crysis, and I thought Crysis 2 was a better game.

I always enjoyed Crytek games and I felt Crysis 2 was a very good blend of Crytek games with a bit more atmosphere/story feel, which are qualities I enjoy in FPS.

Interesting.

I thought its story was incredibly mediocre, its characters all utterly unforgettable, the AI was retarded, multiplayer was retarded, and the gun gameplay in general was just very uninspired.

On the other hand, I enjoyed the first Crysis immensely.

I enjoyed Crysis 2. Had a much more interesting setting than the first game, and the Aliens were much more fun to fight against.

The AI of the Human NPC's weren't as strong as the first game, and the game lacked some of the freedom, but I thought it was a solid shooter.

I find that interesting as well because that's the same problems the original and exp pack have.

The only thing that I find worst in the sequel is the AI but not by much. The game play is roughly the same, MP is pretty much identical and the story is worst in the first game. The mission where you go into the spaceship bogs down the rest of the game and turns the game into a rail gun shooter.

But not everyone has a top 10 or will want to write one up, and this has no poll.

You shouldn't have closeded the thread digi.

I didn't quite say that. But ok. My point was more that you need to define criteria first, because most lists are a mix of varying criteria, and therefore have no basis for comparison. Like, a list that gauges my personal enjoyment and also historical relevance. Those two can't be combined logically. You just have to be specific enough to make sense. Even something like "my favorites that I also think are the best of all-time" creates problems when trying to discuss it.

For example, the Half-Life games would be somewhere on my all-time best ever list, but wouldn't make a list of my top 10 favorites. Enjoyable, just not a top 10 experience for me, but I can separate the two to realize it deserves a spot above, say, NHL '94 on an all-time list.

Hard to comment on most lists. More criteria establishment is needed, consistent with this:

...or something similar. Most lists seem like "personal enjoyment," but then they can't really be commented on because it's subjective. If you like a sh*t game the best, we can't tell you otherwise. So the back and forth becomes largely moot.

With the other criteria (all-time, influence, etc.) we start to use more objective standards based on more than personal input, so those are potentially the more thought-provoking discussions.

Very interesting. Clearly you have big chip on your shouldur. I finally give you your beloved criteria and you close the thread, when you should have been reprimanding bardock for refusing to vote in the poll.

My list...

1. Metal Gear Solid 4
2. Metal Gear Solid 3
3. Metal Gear Solid 2
4. Metal Gear Solid
5. Knights of the Old Republic 2 Restored Version
6. Knights of the Old Republic
7. Dragon Age
8. Mass Effect.
9. Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker.
10. World of Warcraft.
