No, he actually repels his own body from the Earth, and flies along magnetic lines for ease of travel, he can fly without doing that. He flies inside his force field as a habit, because most times he goes somewhere, he needs it to protect himself.
And not necessarily, the blast is just a lot more unfocused with the visor off. Opening the visor to it's maximum setting, is the same as taking it off, it's just more concentrated within the visor.

actually, no, it's not. the blast is wide enough on its own, but the visor either reflects ot absorbs the extra energy. the visor can't be opened wider horizontally. when he has the visor off, there's more energy being released, and at any close range, would do a hell of a lot more damage.
I wasn't talking about horizontally, and I meant the blast was wider without the visor, that's the only real difference, except for the GOML blast. Opening the visor and putting the entire power of his blast into a concentrated spot, does more damage then putting entire power into a widespread area.

he can't open his visor wide enough to use the whole height or width of the beam. the ruby quartz lining even takes away from the blast. it isn't the entire power, because the visor is recycling/absorbing some of it. it's only when he takes it off that the full power of the blast can be brought to bear...

he's lived with the fear of hurting people with his powers since he was a teenager. he lives his life in almost complete control, so cutting loose isn't really something he's used to...
