http://www.superherohype.com/news/ironmannews.php?id=7998Variety has posted an interesting article on how the studios are being cautious about spending money for movies in 2010 and 2011. Here's a surprising bit:
Then there is comeback kid Mickey Rourke, who is poised to follow his Golden Globe-winning performance in "The Wrestler" with an offer to play the main villain in "Iron Man 2" — but at a lowball opening offer of $250,000 from Marvel; Marvel's tactics have already prompted Samuel L. Jackson to swear off playing Nick Fury because of a similarly low offer.
$250,000 sounds pretty darn good to you and us, but when you think that Iron Man earned $582 million at the worldwide box office, plus DVD sales, then something doesn't seem right. Let's hope Mr. Rourke ended up getting a much better deal.
That does seem like a very low offer but then again how much do we know? How much screen time does Fury have in the script? Would there be a box office bonus in Samuel Jacksons contract? Most actors sign a contract with a stipulation that warrants them a certain amount of money if the movie makes a certain amount. If Nick Fury plays a small part in the movie then 250,000 would be a lot of money for the part. You have to look at what the potential is. Possible sequels. Recognition..,etc. Again, i don't know anything about what has been talked about other than that Sam Jackson doesn't want to be apart of Marvel for $250,000.
Before you guys start condemning Marvel for being cheap you have to take into consideration everything that is on MArvels plate. Just over a decade ago Marvel was a step away from closing their doors due to extensive bankruptcy. Marvel has just recently broke ties with outside affiliates and are now producing and distributing their own movies. Undertaking the adaptation of the Avengers from comic to big screen is huge. There will be many busty contracts involved as well as an incredible special effects budget. Marvel's movie aspirations are to much. I mean really, they need to calm down and space these movie's out more. Two failed movie's along with a hurting comic line could cripple Marvel.
Marvel said they are in crises and this is one of those times when they aren't exaggerating. They are simply not selling comics. This is however, their fault. They are publishing to many comic books.
Also, the most important thing to consider about this article is that we don't know how much Sam Jackson was offered. What is low to Sam Jackson? And, it isnt as though he came out and said that he's not doing it, just that he doesnt know.
