It makes absolute sense, that if a blast can destroy his board can in fact damage its body. Since its made of the same composition. Maybe, because he exhibits cosmic aura it acts as a buffer.

Some context for that Mrrungo-Mu scan:

Surfer had given half of his power to a scientist to fly up to Mu's ship and destroy the slave pen reactors which were channeling the life energy of billions upon billions of enslaved races (plus all of Earth's Heroes) into Mu, and he was also stalling for time and allowing himself to get battered so the scientist could finish his mission.
