Yeah I know: why don't the X-wings shoot from very far out instead of circling around the slug? And the slug shouldn't be able to hit the X-wings; the X-wings should be nothing more than a blur.

I think you're being a bit critical of the Vong. They were never the coolest villains (not in my books) but they are intended to be skilled and difficult for Jedi to fight because the Jedi cannot sense their movements and they possess highly resistant weapons and armor. The slug catching the X-Wing was pretty damn awesome, though. If you're going to nitpick, maybe it has some sort of extrasensory natural ability that allowed it to do that?
