L Ron Hubbard wrote comic books and Sci fiction. Hubbard was obsessed with attaining wealth and figured creating a religion would be the easiest way to accomplish all of this.

Hubbard didn't beleive in most of the things he espoused and sough psychiatric help while denouncing the practice.
