so is octopuses

'Octopus' is Greek, so fusing it with a Latinised plural is always incorrect

sorry, that's the english language for you, the next moment *bam* it's consipered proper. ain't that a biznach.

Octopussy

they are all accepted spellings. no need to get etymologically booty bothered.

Octopuses is technically the correct form in English, as we tend to use our own pluralisations than the native root. 'Octopodes' is for smarty-pants people, 'Octopi' is a misnomer

Yeah I'm just pointing out that it's technically entirely incorrect is all

Merriam-Webster accepts "octopi", Oxford does not. Seems like maybe it's a side-of-the-pond issue?

no. it isn't. etymology does not negate the fact that it's accepted as proper english. oh well, tough sell.

I love that 'hypercorrect' is just a synonym for 'wrong'

People made up 'Octopi' because they mistook 'Octopus' for being a Latin word, as opposed to Greek. It's frequently used, but it's entirely hypercorrect.

It's not accepted as proper English by any degree. It's slang. It's perfect to use in conversation, but it's still 100% misnomer.

you can argue that it's less correct, but to go beyond that is just wankin.

Sometimes I think about Mass Effect 1 and think about what could have been

backfire in 3...2...1...

I think you'll find that much of US english is "hypercorrect" compared to its English roots.

There is no language on earth where 'Octopi' is considered anything more than common slang. Not Greek, not Latin, and not English. Like I say, there's nothing wrong with saying it – I use incorrect English on a frequent and purposeful basis – but that doesn't stop 'Octopi' from being a straight-up slang misnomer
