People made up 'Octopi' because they mistook 'Octopus' for being a Latin word, as opposed to Greek. It's frequently used, but it's entirely hypercorrect.

It's not accepted as proper English by any degree. It's slang. It's perfect to use in conversation, but it's still 100% misnomer.
