It's because they are confusing the true liberals with leftists. Someone who is a true liberal wouldn't be whining over speeches they don't like and trying to get people banned from speaking etc.
It's sort of like how the behavior of 3rd wave feminists made the word feminism toxic.

I just want those "I might not agree with what you say, but I will die for your right to say it" liberals to come out in force as opposed to people who need to be consoled cuz Christina Hoff Sommers comes to give a talk they don't even need to attend.
I still find the concept of the 'centre' as dichotomous to how I see the British strain of liberalism; a fusion of left and right perspectives isn't creating a centre ground, it's an attempt to transcend the labels. As far as actual dichotomies go, I'm much more interested in the centre balance between anarchy and total authoritarianism than 'left/right'.
