I think they were innocent and got railroaded. The mother of one of the witnesses that pointed the finger at them later came out and said she thought her daughter might have been lying.
Although it's not evidence there is also the fact that, as of now, there are more members of the victims families who think they are innocent as opposed to who think they are guilty.

There was jury misconduct and DNA evidence(or a lack of) raised new questions. Plus they got a better legal team. Witnesses also changed stories.
They still only were freed after agreeing not to sue for wrongful imprisonment.
