this started around 2011ish

before photobucket changed their format, you were able to delete an already uploaded image, and paste the old image url onto a newly uploaded image. shock-trolls used this trick alot, posting an innocuous image all over the forum and then pulling the url-switch trick, which would turn those posted images into the shock-image of their choosing. goatse, tubgirl, etc

photobucket was great in it's legendary shittiness. accounts were set to non-private by default, so if someone failed to switch to private and posted an image, you could simply delete the image i.d. from the url and have access to their entire album
