One only two episodes I know has the hoodlums at the school vandalise the teachers house cause they don't want to take a test then they vandalise the school then the teacher says he's gonna retire! It was really grim and left an impression on me when I was 7 or whenever I saw it.
You were that kid.

U wanna talk grim, what about that episode of The Wonder Years with the math teacher?
The math teacher before this ep was seen as sort of a curmudgeon but in this episode he helps Kevin and tutors him. He tells Kevin he will be away when an important math test is to happen. Kevin gets upset and feels betrayed and fails on purpose.
Then a few days later when he tries to find the teacher to apologize he finds out he died of a heart condition.

Sure it was, the kid would be at school then some situational comedy would happen then he'd do the commentary bit then that was it bing bang bosh Bob's your uncle n all that
It was a coming of age drama that had some comedic elements, but it wasn't a sitcom. Notice the lack of a laugh track?
Plus it had a lot of depressing episodes.
