When it comes to relationships I've learn to speak my truth. If I want something I say it. If its something important like a milestone we discuss it together. But life isn't always that simple, you can't make someone do something they are not ready for especially if they are strongly opinionated.

All you can do is support them and have them know you have their best interests. But eventually you have to ask yourself if the relationship is growing just as you are. You need to know when to say no and know when to walk away.
